Currently my kitchen….

October 22, 2008

is filled with apples……Joe and I have been going on early morning gleaning missions around downtown Nevada City. The foods we have our eye on currently are apples, chestnuts, walnuts and some grapes here and there.

As mentioned in my previous post, our new friend Jerome was just visiting……we went on a gleaning walk with him and he came up with the name “Ferrel Foods”. Not wild foods, but fruit bearing trees that were at one time, planted and tended, but have been left unattended for many years and yet still manage to bear fruits! I was wondering if the flavors change over time, depending on the amount of care they receive?

These apples on our shelf were found on North Pine Street in a backyard apple tree…..on the verge of becoming ferrel.

In fact this morning I tried to re-create Stacy’s tart with these apples…….It sure looks good!

One of my projects right now is making a list, season by season of all of the gleaned, wild, and ferrel fruit trees I know of. Next up is fungus……I can’t wait to go mushroom hunting the next time it rains!
