Kids IN THE KITCHEN

April 24, 2009

I always say that everyone loves to be in the kitchen. It is usually the warmest place in the house, it is where good smells and tastes come out of, it is where you go to be nourished.

What could be better than starting your kids culinary education off at an early age? Have them sit on the counter with you while you make dinner, if they want to, let them help!

I recently taught a young children’s cooking class for kids and parents to attend together. We made banana muffins and homemade butter! I have included some pictures and the recipes if you want to try this with you own little one.

p1010007In The Kitchen has some fun kids classes coming up in May:

Friday May 1st
Kids In The Kitchen- MEXICAN FIESTA!
3:30-5:30 pm / $35

Alma Rowe enjoys inspiring children to appreciate good food and work together to create dishes that are tasty, wholesome and festive.

Alma’s culinary background: my fondness for good food goes way back to childhood where I grew up in a multi-cultural environment in San Francisco. As a young adult, I worked in a natural foods store and learned about organic food and all of the wonderful food choices that are available to us. From there, it was non-stop cooking for friends and family. I love to make ethnic and traditional dishes. In addition, I enjoy cooking with children and hope to inspire an appreciation for good food and to have fun in the kitchen!

Also, a very cool class for parents who want to encourage healthy eating habits in their children, May 16th:

Saturday May 16th
Cooking for your Child: A Culinary Workshop for Parents
Graham Hayes
10-1pm / $40
As parents we face the ongoing challenge of nourishing our children each and every day. We know that a wholesome diet is crucial to our children’s well being; however, getting them to eat anything, especially something fresh and well balanced, can leave us feeling overwhelmed.

In this class we will explore cooking methods that will bring satisfaction to your children’s taste buds and optimum nourishment to their bodies without complicating your schedule. We will discuss ways to engage you and your children more deeply into the joy, knowledge and wonder of delicious whole food home-cookery. Focusing on empowering your creativity, spontaneity, and general culinary understanding; the first portion of this class will be dedicated to a discussion and demonstration where we will explore:

Understanding Ingredient Function and Interaction: Oils, Herbs/Spice, Salts, Cooking Liquids.

The Cooking Process: A general template for cooking meals the whole family can enjoy with what you have on hand.
And much more!
