Wild Foods CSA-first class and pick up

April 8, 2011

Matt and Rachel Berry (yes their last name IS Berry!) Led us through our first Wild Foods CSA…..community supported AWARENESS last night at In the Kitchen!

We had the chance to learn about, identify and sample a variety of wild edibles found literally in our backyards! As we learned about some common edible weeds, we put together a yummy salad mix to take home. It included, Miner’s Lettuce, a protein rich, tender green, Yarrow, a feathery green that also has cooling medicinal properties, good for soothing scratches and burns, wild radish, a pleasantly spicy green and dandelion, my personal fav! When I got home we made a salad with just olive oil, lemon and sea salt and it was SO yummy, and it just felt nourishing!

We also began the process of making a yarrow saav through a cold olive oil infusion. We will revisit it in 2 weeks upon our next meeting. Some of the other foods we learned about and took home were Wapato, a native root harvested when it is dormant. It is yummy, sliced and roasted with olive oil and salt (what isn’t though!) We also got to take home Manzanita flowers which are SO abundant right now. They are yummy on salads and just as a sweet snack.
